2010 Charlotte Zolotow Award from CCBC

Melissa
Stewart |

|
We’re delighted to announce that CLN member Melissa Stewart authored one of the four 2010 Charlotte Zolotow Highly Commended books, Under the Snow (Peachtree). Illustrated by Constance R. Bergum, the book is a wonderful addition to the home or classroom library, answering questions children have about animals in winter. It’s wonderful to have this lovely book recognized in this manner.
The Cooperative Children’s Book Center at the University of Wisconsin chose What Can You Do with a Paleta? by Carmen Tafolla (Tricycle Press) as its Charlotte Zolotow award winner for outstanding writing in a picture book for ages birth to seven. “A sprinkling of Spanish words and Magaly Morales’ sun-warmed acrylic illustrations add details of life in a vibrant barrio where the daily arrival of the paleta wagon is met with anticipation and celebration.”
There are three Honor books this year: Birds by Kevin Henkes, illus by Laura Dronzek (Greenwillow); Pouch! by David Ezra Stein (Putnam/Penguin); Princess Hyacinth: the Surprising Tale of a Girl Who Floated, Florence Parry Heide, illus by Lane Smith (Schwartz & Wade/Random House).
In addition to Melissa’s book, three titles were Highly Commended: Hello Baby! by Memo Fox, illus by Steve Jenkins (Beach Lane/S&S); Ready for Anything! by Keiko Kasza (Putnam/Penguin); and Who Will I Be, Lord? by Vaunda Micheaux Nelson, illus by Sean Qualls (Random House).
The Charlotte Zolotow Award honors the work of author and editor Charlotte Zolotow, who studied at the University of Wisconsin in Madison from 1933 to 1936. The director of the CCBC is Kathleen T. Horning, who served as chair of the Award committee.
