Joanna Cole, born on August 11th, is author of the immensely popular Magic School Bus series. Joanna loved science as a child and had a teacher who was a little like Mrs. Frizzle. She first worked as an elementary school teacher, a librarian, and a children's book editor. Combining her knowledge of children's literature and her love of science, she decided to write children's books. For the Magic School Bus series, Cole does extensive reading, visits museums, and talks to experts. Once she has collected enough information, she synthesizes the facts into a dummy book complete with speech balloons, school reports, and all the jokes found in every book. The dummy is then turned over to Bruce Degen to work on the illustrations. Cole has now written more than 90 nonfiction and fiction books for children and considers writing “the greatest fun.”
