Gorilla Anthony Browne
Shape Game My Dad
British author and illustrator Anthony Browne celebrates his birthday on Sept. 11th. He was born in Sheffield, England, where his parents ran a pub. He obtained a degree in graphic design from Leeds College of the Arts and worked as a medical illustrator, a teacher, and greeting card designer before publishing his first book, Through the Magic Mirror, in 1976. Gorilla, published in 1983, won the Kate Greenaway Medal and numerous awards in the U.S. His narrative watercolors tell the story of a lonely child whose toy gorilla comes to life and becomes her cherished companion. Browne uses visual puns, detail pattern and background to set mood and sometimes underlying themes. His latest work, Willy the Wizard, was published in 2003.
