CLN members are active in the children's literature community, taking part in readings, public appearances, school visits, conferences, fund-raising activities, committee work to enhance reading and literacy efforts, and sometimes just having fun together.

Lee Ann Landstrom (left) and Anne Iverson accept the award from the National Association of Interpretation for Nature's Yucky 2: Animals of the Desert Southwest (Mountain Press Publishing). Lee Ann co-authored the book with Karen I Shragg. Anne is the Marketing Manager for Mountain Press Publishing. They visited Portland, Oregon, to accept this prestigious award. Congratulations!

Karen Magnuson Beil, Mary Cash, Mike Wohnoutka

CLN illustrator Mike Wohnoutka was honored for his illustrations in Jack's House by the Society of Illustrator's Original Art Show in New York on October 16th. At left are the architects of Jack's House, Karen Magnuson Beil (author), Mary Cash (editor, Holiday House) and Mike Wohnoutka (illustrator). Mike said, "To see my artwork on the same walls as some of my favorite illustrators like David Shannon, Loren Long, Adam Rex, Shel Silverstein, just to name a few, was such an honor."

Six on the Spot: a Poetry Challenge, put these six poets on the spot to follow a poem read by one person with another that was similar in idea, form, word, or topic. Reading from their own poems and raps were, from left to right, Sharon Chmielarz, Nikki Grimes, Rob Reid, Susan Marie Swanson, Joyce Sidman, and Lisa Westberg Peters. This event took place at the Minnesota Reading Association conference on November 8th, in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota.

At the first performance of their Reader's Theater program, authors (l. to r.) Lynne Jonell (Emmy and the Incredible Shrinking Rat, Emmy and the Home for Troubled Girls), John Coy (Crackback, Box Out), David LaRochelle (Absolutely, Positively Not), and Mary Casanova (Kliptish Code, Dog Watch series), entertained teachers at the Minnesota Reading Association conference with scripts from each of their books. This four-voice reading troupe created unforgettable characters, including a rat and a detecting pack of dogs.
