Claudia's website

Claudia McGehee likes to dig. She digs in gardens. She digs in library stacks. She digs through the internet. She even digs while making illustrations, where scratchings from an X-acto blade create wood-cut like images.

All this digging reveals stories, often inspired from history and nature.

Some days she writes about pictures. Some days she draws about words.

Claudia is the author/illustrator of three non-fiction picture books: A Tallgrass Prairie Alphabet, A Woodland Counting Book, and Where Do Birds Live?, all from University of Iowa Press. She also illustrated Welcome, Child of God, a board book on baptism, published by Augsburg Fortress and first place 2011 Midwest Book Award winner.

Her distinctive scratchboard style can also be found nationally in museum exhibits, packaging, greeting cards, and magazines.

Claudia is a native of Washington state. She earned degrees in archaeology (she likes to dig, remember?) and graphic design. She also studied natural history at Oxford University in England. She lives in Iowa City, sharing a house on a hill with her husband and daughter and two studio cats.
