Consie’s school and library presentations usually share the experience of creating a picture book, starting with the initial idea, and following it through the various stages of creation, culminating with a finished book. As writer and illustrator, she can share a broad perspective of both the writer’s and illustrator’s work. She can bring samples of early drafts of writing and illustrating, as well as materials used for illustrations and sample of finished artwork. Additional areas that can be included or concentrated on, as they pertain to Consie’s books: Keeping a field journal/sketchbook with written notes and sketches As an artist and naturalist, Consie keeps sketch journals that chronicle her life in the world around her and feels that such “note taking,” be it written or visual, is a valuable tool for teachers and students. She has given workshops for teachers, as well as worked with students in getting them started on journaling. She is open to creative options to work with teachers and students, for nature journaling can have broad educational applications, be they in science, literature, history or creative arts. Keeping a journal is a wonderful way to pay attention to and learn from nature and the world around you. |
