FIRST PUBLISHED BOOK: Quequechan: Forgotten River, fall 2007

MY GENRE: Innovative nonfiction for kids

TOPICS I'M WRITING ABOUT: nature, horses, math adventures, maple sugaring, baked beans

MY PASSION: Taking care of the earth, our only home, so future generations don't innocently inherit a mess

FAVORITE TRIP: In the summer of 1998, I rode my bike to Provincetown, Massachusetts, from my home 134 miles away. My three children, ages 14, 13, and 10, accompanied me. The trip took three days. When my husband picked us up in Provincetown, he forgot to bring the car bicycle rack!

FUNNY ATTRIBUTE: I can get good grades in school, but I can't remember whether to turn right or left down the hall.

MOST EMBARRASSING MOMENT: When I was seven years old, I rode my bicycle into a leash right between a little old lady and her little old dog.

FAVORITE COLOR: Earth

FAVORITE ANIMAL: Police horses

FAVORITE JOB: Teaching children

FAVORITE HOBBY NEXT TO READING AND WRITING: Tough decision—it's between scuba diving and making maple syrup in my backyard.

FAVORITE FICTION BOOK: The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver

FAVORITE NONFICTION BOOK: Guns, Germs, and Steel by Jared Diamond

A nonfiction picture book for readers 8-12 years old

A river in Fall River, Massachusetts, relates its life story from the time of its first meeting with the "People of the East" to its present day abandoned state. I wrote the story to foster an appreciation for nature and to help prevent people from repeating the mistakes of the past.
