Speaking and School Visits Kyra loves speaking to students about illustration and writing. In a lively and image-packed talk, Kyra discusses her career as an artist, how she researches culture and costume for every book, and how revision is essential to every project. Kyra also offers a special workshop to deepen students’ understanding of their connection to a story and show them tools they might use to express themselves visually. The students make quick finger paintings or sculptures in response to readings of poetry, folktales, or other material pertinent to the teacher’s classroom goals. Working quickly in this way gives access to core feelings and reactions that can be very powerful, but are often censored in favor of more “complete” or “developed” ideas (especially in high-achieving students). These first thoughts can become the building blocks of more polished work. While it is possible to do this workshop in the space of one class period, it is better as part of a multi-day exploration of stories and images. 2007 Fees: 1 to 2 class periods: $500 (within 2 hours of Albany, NY only) Full day (4 class period maximum): $900 plus travel expenses Fees for multi-day visits or workshops are individually negotiated. |
