Hungry for a good read? E. L. Konigsburg, whose birthday is February 10th, says "I let the telling [of my stories] be like fudge-ripple ice cream. You keep licking the vanilla, but every now and then you come to something darker and deeper and with a stronger flavor." She has been very successful at creating this "taste"; winning the Newbery Award twice for her books, From the Mixed-up files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler and A View from Saturday, as well as writing several other stories for children such as Altogether, One at a Time, and Throwing Shadows.
Konigsburg was born Elaine Lobl. She was very interested in science and chemistry when she was young, and after she graduated top of her class in high school, she went on to college and got her degree in chemistry. After getting married and moving to Florida, she taught at a private girls school for three years. She left when her first child, Paul, was born. He was followed by Laurie and Ross a few years later.
Konigsburg began writing, and in 1968 she received a Newbery Medal for From the Mixed-up files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler and she received a Newbery Honor Award for her book, Jennifer, Hecate, MacBeth, William McKinley, and Me, Elizabeth, making her the first author to win two of these prestigious awards in the same year! She continued writing.
