Debra Frasier was born on April 3rd in Vero Beach, Florida, a town for which her great-grandfather originally surveyed the streets. She graduated from Florida State University. She later attended Penland School of Crafts in North Carolina, where she began making large moving sculptures, such as puppets that were so large people climbed inside them to make them work and wind sculptures commissioned by cities for municipal artwork. She moved with her husband to Minnesota in 1984 and began illustrating books by assembling paper and found objects. Her first book, On the Day You Were Born, was published in 1991 and became an instant classic. One of her later books, Miss Alaineus: a Vocabulary ;Disaster, inspires costume parties in schools throughout the land as kids dress up for Vocabulary Parades in word-based costumes. The Incredible Water Show, brings back the class from Miss Alaineus for science experiments. Her most recent books is A Birthday Cake is No Ordinary Cake, a continuation of the celebration begun in On the Day You Were Born.
