Born on May 17th, children’s author Eloise Greenfield was born in Parmele, North Carolina, but grew up in Langston Terrace, a housing development in Washington, D.C. There, she experienced a sense of community among African American families that fills her books with hope and reassurance.
In 1978, she received the Coretta Scott King Award for Africa Dream. Ms. Greenfield was given the Award for Excellence in Poetry for Children by the National Council of Teachers of English. In 1999, she became a member of the National Literary Hall of Fame for Writers of African Descent.
