Author and illustrator Lillian Hoban was born on May 18, 1925. She already wanted to illustrate children's books as a child and won a scholarship to the Philadelphia Museum School and majored in illustration. She worked as a dancer (she danced with Martha Graham) and dance instructor during the 1950's before beginning a career in children's books.
She illustrated her first book, Herman the Loser, written by her husband Russell Hoban in 1961. She went on to illustrate six of his books about Frances and her cozy badger family. After a while, she began writing her own stories. She has a cheerful style and gave great attention to the emotions of young children, often disguised as animals. Her Arthur and Mr. Pig easy readers are classics in the genre.
Lillian died in 1998 and much of her work is housed in the de Grummund Collection.
