Born in Germany on August 18th, Sonia Levitin was the youngest sister in a Jewish family. Her parents were uncomfortable with what was happening in their country, so they moved to Brazil when Sonia was one year old. Her father found it difficult to make a living there and the family moved back to Berlin. However, in 1938, Sonia's mother encouraged her husband to go to America, sensing that the political climate would not improve. So when Sonia was four years, her family moved to California. Ms. Levitin earned her BA in education from the University of Pennsylvania. After the birth of her daughter, she began writing her memoirs, which eventually became Journey to America, her first book. Sonia Levitin now has more than thirty books published. She and her husband live in southern California where Ms. Levitin teaches writing through UCLA Extension.
