Patricia McKissack, an author committed to producing strong, accurate, and appealing stories by and about African Americans, celebrates her birthday on August 9th. She grew up in a storytelling family in Tennessee, graduated from Tennessee State University, and taught English on the junior high and college level in St. Louis, Missouri. The varied literary needs of her students inspired her to write, and she has prolifically produced easy readers, biographies, picture books, and information books, all reflecting her rich heritage and its traditions. Alone and with her husband, Frederick, McKissack has written more than 50 books. Together, they have won a Coretta Scott King Award and Honor, Boston Globe-Horn Book Award, a Caldecott Honor, and the Regina Medal of the Catholic Library Association in 1998. Titles include Flossie and the Fox, Mirandy and Brother Wind, and Sojourner Truth: Ain't I a Woman.
