Matchmaking Your Manuscript

Are you ready to submit your children’s book manuscript—but struggling with the practicalities of how to go about doing so?

These two online classes are designed to help you develop the skills you need to give your manuscript its best possible chance. The classes are designed to complement each other; you can take both—or either one individually—based on your own assessment of your needs.

Participants: Maximum of 15, minimum of 8. You should have a children's book or YA book manuscript that is ready to submit to a publisher.

Class 1: Matchmaking Your Manuscript:
Finding the Children’s Book Publisher that Is Right for You

3-week class; Next offered January 13 to February 2, 2011
Fee: $195
Registration deadline is January 10, 2011.

Do you have a manuscript ready to submit to a children’s book publisher—but you don’t have a clue who to send it to? You’ve heard through the grapevine that this editor is changing houses, that publisher is “closed,” your friend says you must have an agent—what’s a not-yet-published writer to do?

We can help you figure out your next step. The children’s book universe IS more complicated than ever! But the good news is that we can teach you some basics that will demystify this industry and help you target your submissions appropriately. There’s no magic handshake—but we can show you how to approach the business the way a professional would, instead of coming off as a “dabbler.”

The goal for this course is for you to gain the knowledge and confidence to create a targeted list of the appropriate editors for your manuscript. And the same steps you learn here will work for your future writing projects as well.

The workshop will be team-taught by two published children’s book writers (see the co-instructors note below). We aren’t agents—sadly, there aren’t enough of those to go around! And we won’t be submitting your manuscripts for you. We will help you learn how to be a matchmaker for your own work: we will guide you step-by-step through the research process and show you how to improve your manuscripts’ chances of making that “perfect match”! We have hands-on experience as writers and writing instructors, and we’ll share our editing and publishing expertise with you.

By the end of the class, you will have created a list of potential editors for your project and gotten personalized feedback from the instructors on your choices. You will feel confident that you are focusing on the steps that will really move you forward and increase your odds of finding a publisher that’s a match for your manuscript.

This class will cover:

  • researching publishers and editors
  • understanding the children’s book marketplace
  • identifying market trends
  • exploring other routes to publication (agents, contests, magazines)
  • personalized feedback on your editor “hit list”

Register for this 3-week class:

Register for both classes and receive a one-year CLN Green Circle membership. If you're already a member, you'll receive a one-year extension of your membership equivalent to $40.

Refund Policy: If a student withdraws from class before the class begins, all money collected will be refunded except for a $15 processing fee. Withdrawal once class has begun will result in a pro-rated refund for the remainder of the class.

Love at First Sight

Class 2: Love at First Sight:
How to Write a Cover Letter that Makes Editors “Swoon”

3-week Class, next offered February 17 to March 9, 2011
Fee: $195
Registration deadline is February 10, 2011.

Participants: Maximum of 15, minimum of 8. You should have a children's book or YA book manuscript that is ready to submit to a publisher.

Are you ready to submit your children’s book manuscript—but sitting down to write a cover letter leaves you overwhelmed and paralyzed? If you can complete a manuscript, you can write a polished, professional, and savvy cover letter too! This class will help you learn how to write a cover or query letter that makes the best possible first impression on busy editors or agents.

Cover letters are sales documents. But you don’t want to over-sell—or fail to sell at all! The goal for this course is for you to gain the knowledge and confidence to write a cover letter that gives your manuscript the best possible chance of catching an overworked editor’s attention. And the same skills you learn here will be things you can apply to future cover letters as well.

After we’ve given you the basic “how-to” guidelines, you’ll have a chance to write a cover or query letter and submit it for personalized feedback from both of the two instructors.

The workshop will be team-taught by two published children’s book writers (see the co-instructors note below). We have hands-on experience as writers and as writing instructors, and we’ll share our editing and publishing expertise with you. We will guide you step-by-step through the cover-letter-writing process and show you how to improve your chances of making a great first impression.
This class will cover:

  • how to identify your manuscript based on the current children’s book marketplace
  • how to write a great hook
  • the differences between query and cover letters
  • how to create your submissions package
  • personalized feedback on one cover letter

[Suggested pre-requisite: To get the most out of Class 2, you should have already identified a list of target editors and be able to articulate why they are the right matches for your manuscript. If you haven’t yet taken this step, you will want to do so before class begins, or consider taking Class 1 as well.]

The Co-Instructors: Lisa Bullard & Laura Purdie Salas
Both the instructors bring a special expertise to the class—Lisa has worked in publishing and has an extensive marketing background; Laura has an incredible knack for keeping track of the changes in the publishing arena and knowing about editors’ special interests. As published children’s book writers both, they understand what it means to stand in your shoes! And as their student, you benefit from the expertise of two different professional writers.

Still Wondering If You’ll Get
What You Need from an Online Class?

Here’s what one of our former students had to say:

“I like the ability to log in at any time that's convenient to me and to go back over the online conversations at my leisure. Unless you have a recorder you can't review the conversations in an in-person class! And I don't have to puzzle over unintelligible notes. ... I would definitely recommend this class to writer friends. And I would also take another online class— this has been a positive experience.” —Cheryl

Online advantages:

  • Go to class in your “jammies”
  • Long-distance learning opportunity
  • Participate the days and times that are best for you
  • Meet writers from around the country
  • No messy commutes
  • No need to take notes
  • We are not “tech” snobs—we’ll help you make your online experience a friendly one
And in this case, our online approach is also personalized—we answer your individual questions on a speedy basis, and we respond personally to your homework assignments!
