Rick Chrustowski

Where We've Been

At the Minnesota Children's Authors and Illustrators Festival at the Anderson Center in Red Wing, Minnesota, author and illustrator Rick Chrustwoski enthralled visitors with 15-minute lessons on doing what he does. With crayons and paper, children and adults worked diligently as they "Learn to Draw with Rick Chrustwoski." Drawing brilliantly colored bugs, reptiles, and mammals, Rick showed how layering color makes drawings more realistic. Many people sat through more than one lesson. It was a spectacular day to spend outdoors with people and books. Thanks to Red Balloon Bookshop and the Anderson Center for inviting CLN to take part for its sixth year.

Shout It Out!

We're really proud of Mike Wohnoutka. Art from his newest book, Jack's House, has been selected to be part of the Society of Illustrators Original Art Exhibition in New York City. The show runs from October 16th to November 26th at the Museum of American Illustration in New York. One original illustration from Jack's House will be featured in the show. Add this honor to the great review the book received in Kirkus and Holiday House choosing Jack's House for the cover of its fall catalogue, and we can say this book has gotten off to a great start. Those last two honors are shared by Karen Magnuson Beil, the author of Jack's House. (posted 21 August 2008)

“Time and again [Lucy Sprague Mitchell] exhorted them to trust, not disparage, their imaginative instincts, for, as she assured a group of teacher trainees one day, "All that glittes is not guilt!"
