2010 Golden Kite Awards Honor Two CLN Members
Congratulations to Marion Dane Bauer, whose luscious book, The Longest Night, was recognized by the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators as the 2010 Golden Kite Award winner for picture book text. A book about forest animals struggling to end a long winter night, bringing back the warmth and cheer of the sun, is a wonderful read-aloud. With all the snow throughout the country, it has more relevancy than ever! Illustrated by Ted Lewin in cool blues and whites, this is a picture book to cherish. The Longest Night is published by Holiday House.
Rebecca Kai Dotlich received the Golden Kite Honor in this same category, picture book text, for her Bella & Bean (Atheneum). When a rat who’s a moody poet and a rat who’s a ball of energy work to be friends, the result is a book about friendship but also about the poetic process. Working on several levels, the text is pleasantly matched by Aileen Leijten’s illustrations.
Two fine books by two fine writers … it’s a delight to find them honored in this way.

Even if you child asks to hear this story every night, Born Yesterday is so laugh-out-loud funny that you won't mind." —Katherine Fergason, Bunch of Grapes Bookstore, Vineyard Haven, MA
So Many Days by Allison McGhee, illus by Taeeun Yoo (Atheneum)

Split by Swati Avasthi (Knopf)
"At age 16, Jace Witherspoon has finally fled from the home of his violently abusive father. With only the return address on an envelope slipped to him by his mother as he left, he travels to find safe haven with his long- vanished older brother. Split is the story of their prickly and unexpected reunion, and the two brothers' struggles to reconcile the legacy of their damaged upbringing with the possibility of a new life. Dynamically told through Jace's voice, this story is relentless and captivating." —Karen McCollom, TheYankee Bookshop, Woodstock, VT
