I’ve developed versions featuring ducks, raccoons, and elephants, to name a few. The latest fits the 2013 Collaborative Summer Library Program theme “Dig Into Reading” and is here for any librarian looking for a last minute program idea.

 

“We’re Going to Explore a Cave” by Rob Reid

This activity is based on the traditional story program activity “We’re Going on a Bear Hunt.” Everyone stands.

 

We’re going to explore a cave today,

We’re going to explore a cave.

 

Let’s go!                                              (Slap legs for a few seconds to indicate walking and then stop.)

It’s dark in here.

Turn on your lights.                             (Mime turning on headlamps.)

 

We’re going to explore a cave today, (Slap legs.)

We’re going to explore a cave.           (Stop slapping.)

 

Careful! Tight squeeze.                       (Turn sideways and shuffle a few steps to mime squeezing

through a narrow passage.)

 

We’re going to explore a cave today, (Slap legs.)

We’re going to explore a cave.           (Stop slapping.)

 

Look there! Underground pond.        (Make swimming motions.)

 

We’re going to explore a cave today, (Slap legs.)

We’re going to explore a cave.           (Stop slapping.)

 

Watch out! Low ceiling.                     (Crawl.)

 

We’re going to explore a cave today, (Slap legs.)

We’re going to explore a cave.           (Stop slapping.)

 

Wow! A big room.                              (Gaze around.)

What’s that flapping sound?               (Hold hand to ear.)

BATS!                                                 (Make a frightened face and swat “bats” away from head.)

Let’s get out of here!                          (Slap legs.)

Low ceiling!                                        (Crawl and then stand and slap legs.)

Underground pond!                            (Make swimming motions and then slap legs.)

Tight Squeeze!                                    (Shuffle sideways and then slap legs.)

We’re out!                                           (Raise hands in triumph.)

Turn off your lights.                            (Mime turning off lights.)

Oh look! The bats followed us.          (Point.)

They’re catching bugs.                        (Continue pointing.)

Bye bats!                                             (Wave.)

Bye cave!                                            (Wave.)

 

We explored a cave today.                 (Point to self proudly.)

We explored a cave.

Whew!                                                            (Wipe forehead with sleeve.)
